What do the CoolGlide® Laser Hair Removal treatments feel like?

Because of its cold tip, the CoolGlide® hand piece cools and soothes as it glides along your skin. When the pulse of light is delivered, there is a mild stinging sensation but most patients report that it is much less than with other laser hair removal devices. No local anesthesia or pain medicine is typically required; however some patients may prefer to use a topical anesthetic available from our office on sensitive areas like the bikini line or upper lip. As a courtesy to our patients, we provide complimentary cream anesthetic for patients having those areas treated.

How many Laser Hair Removal treatments will I need?

For permanent hair reduction most areas require at least 7 treatments but the number of CoolGlide® treatments required for optimal long-term benefits depends on multiple factors- hair thickness, the area treated and your hair’s growth cycle. Coarse hair, like that usually found in the underarm or bikini areas, responds best while finer hair, like that found on the legs, lips & arms, may require more treatments. 

Not all hairs are actively growing at any one time and actually go through three distinct phases: growth, regression, and resting. CoolGlide® treatments work by disabling the hair that is principally in the active growth phase at the time of treatment. Since hairs will enter this active growth phase at different times, treatments are repeated every 4 to 8 weeks for permanent hair removal in order to eventually disable all of the hair follicles as they enter the growth phase. Patients with excessive hair growth due to hormonal problems, such as Polycystic Ovary Syndrome or excessive androgen hormones will not respond significantly to any laser hair removal treatments until the hormone problem has been treated.

What should I know before a Laser Hair Removal treatment?

Laser hair removal is only effective on dark hair. The only effective treatment for white, blonde or gray hair is electrolysis. Don’t pluck or wax the hair to be treated for at least 2 weeks before your treatments so that the hairs are present in the follicles but remember to shave the area to be treated as close to the time of your treatment as possible. Even though the CoolGlide® is safe for hair removal even on black skin, limiting sun exposure and self tanning products before treatments will increase the speed of hair reduction.
