Remove brown spots, sun damage, and decrease skin redness
The Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) device produces a range of light wavelengths unlike a laser which is a single wavelength. Certain wavelengths are attracted to certain colors, heating them up just as a black car in the sun will feel hotter to the touch than a white car next to it. When an IPL is used that has those wavelengths chosen to interact with dark skin pigment or redness, it heats up those areas more than surrounding lighter skin. The heat produced in the areas being treated makes the dark spots flake away and diminishes the redness.

Any area of the body can be treated with IPL and the face, chest, back and arms are the most popular areas because they typically have had the most sun exposure. No anesthetic or messy gel is needed and each pulse of the IPL feels like a momentary snap or sting. Each treatment usually takes only a few minutes. Afterwards, brown spots will get darker and over the course of one to three weeks, they'll flake away. For thicker brown spots or "barnacles", a laser that vaporizes away the spots is often combined with IPL.

"I wanted to thank you and your staff for my recent “transformation”. I’d been looking in the mirror for the past 10 years at a face with too many brown spots. Reminded me of my Dad at age 80. I finally overcame any hang-ups I had and took my wife’s advice to see the best skin doctor in town. You proved it with the wonderful work you did to erase time and the many brown spots I’d almost come to accept as part of my life. The short term healing process was well worth it. Thanks again.

When IPL is used for treating redness, there may be some increased redness from the treatment for a day or two. Most people can get rid of dark spots with only one or two treatments but for rosacea or improving areas of diffuse sun damage, an average of 3 treatments (or 1 IPL with Levulan as described below) may be needed.
IPL with Levulan® or Photodynamic Therapy
Intense Pulsed Light with Levulan (Photodynamic Therapy) uses the light sensitizing chemical Levulan to produce a more dramatic reaction to the IPL treatment. This technique is recommended especially for removing sun damage, precancerous areas, and for reducing resistant acne breakouts. It not only reduces spots and redness, it improves skin texture, reduces fine lines and makes pores appear smaller. Levulan is painted onto the area to be treated about an hour before the IPL treatment and because of the increased light sensitivity, sun exposure must be strictly avoided for the following 48 hours.

What to expect: No anesthetic is needed. The handpiece is applied to the skin and when activated produces a flash of light that feels like a momentary hot or snapping sensation. A sun burn sensation is common for the first day or two and peeling may occur for up to 5 days but the results will be brighter, smoother skin. Because Levulan® is a chemical that makes the skin temporarily more sensitive to sunlight, sun exposure must be strictly avoided for the first 48 hours after each treatment.
